Application guidelines for the seventh annual Yvar Mikhashoff Pianist/Composer Commissioning Project AWARD • $3000 (US) to the composer for the composition of a new work for piano solo (with or without electronics) of a minimum duration of 12 minutes. The work will be premiered between January 1 and September 1, 2015. • $3000 (US) to the pianist for the performance of the new work. • The competition will be judged by the Artistic Committee of the Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music. WHO MAY APPLY • The competition is limited to applicants, both pianists and composers, born on or after January 1, 1979. • Pianists who are composers may not apply to commission themselves. • Pianists may not apply to commission a work that is already in-progress or has been publicly presented either in part or whole. • Both pianists and composers may appear on only one application per cycle. • Previous awardees of the Yvar Mikhashoff Trust who meet the above qualifications are eligible to apply. • Previous first-prize winners of the Commissioning Project are ineligible to apply. • Previous applicants may apply with the same or different partners. HOW TO APPLY Application materials should be uploaded via our ArtsApp.com portal. After registering with ArtsApp, you may upload your score and other documents (in PDF format) and recordings (in Mp3 or mp4 format). Total application size must be under 3GB, with a maximum file size of 500MB. Please upload EACH PIECE as its own file in the formats listed above. Important: Only one member of your team should register and submit materials for each team. For technical support with your ArtsApp submission, contact support@artsapp.com. The fee for submitting your application via ArtsApp is $10 per team, payable on the ArtsApp Web site. If, for some reason, it is not possible for you to use ArtsApp to submit your application materials, please contact Amy Williams, Competition Coordinator, via email: Amy From the pianist: • Application Form (Word document) or (.pdf document) Use this form only for applications submitted by mail, it is not necessary for applications submitted through ArtsApp.com • a one-page biography. • a list of solo piano pieces and concertos in the pianist's repertoire composed since 1950. • a demonstration recording with performances by the pianist of a total of three pieces chosen from the repertoire list. The performances may be live or edited. Solo piano is preferred; however, one piece may be a concerto or chamber work with a substantial piano part. • copies of three programs of past solo piano recitals with at least 50% of the music composed since 1950. The same pieces may appear on more than one program. • a recording, audio or video, documenting one of the above recital programs. This should not be edited, except to remove/limit applause. • a proposal for the premiere of the commissioned piece, including a letter of agreement with the presenting organization for a concert to take place between January 1 and September 1, 2015. Please also include a list of additional repertoire that you would consider performing with the commissioned piece on such a concert. The presenting organization may be affiliated with a college or university. From the composer: • Application Form (Word document) or (.pdf document) Use this form only for applications submitted by mail, it is not necessary for applications submitted through ArtsApp.com • a one-page biography. • a representative list of works and performances. • a signed letter of commitment to the project, stating his/her agreement to compose the piece between January 1 and September 1, 2015 and to attend the premiere. If the proposed piece includes electronics, the letter should describe the technical requirements. • scores and recordings of three recent compositions. It is preferable that one of the pieces to be for solo piano; however, if this is not available, at least one piece should have a prominent piano part. All the above material should be uploaded to the ArtsApp.com portal. Submissions will be deposited in the Yvar Mikhashoff Archive at the University at Buffalo Music Library. Schedule: Submission deadline: November 15, 2013 Announcement of winner: January 2014 The winning composer must send two copies of the finished score and a demonstration recording to the Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music at the address below. The score must include the acknowledgement: "commissioned by the Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music". One copy of the score will be deposited in the score collection of the University at Buffalo Music Library; the other score and the recording will remain in the archives of the Trust.
